Het ingetogen The City And You verhaalt over haar enkele jaren geleden plotseling overleden oom in New York.

Mara Sophie has started to develop her own idiom within songwriting, with influences like pop, jazz, country and folk. These songs are her most personal work so far. “When I’m moved by something I write songs. That’s who I am. The hernia made me very vulnerable so inspiration
wasn’t a problem. For example, the single No Man’s Land is about the confusing time when you
decide to end a relationship but haven’t told anyone yet. It’s a special moment where you’re still connected to each other but you realize you have to let go.”
The subdued “The City & You” tells the story about the time her uncle suddenly passed away.
“He was living in New York and my father visited him often. When we traveled there to arrange
the funeral my father expressed the city now felt like a cold place, almost like a hollow shell.
I wrote the song for him with the hope that ‘One of these days, the city would become a place
of solace instead of sadness.’ A lot of my songs were written like this. I write them for others,
but they’re very personal to me as well.”
